This is an easy home-made vegan pastry like dessert that is good for your gut. Ingredients:
- Shan Yao 山藥 (Chinese Yam) – Good for digestion and chronic cough caused by weakness. The fresh Shan Yao harvested during winter and early spring. Frozen ones can be easily found in Asian supermarket stores.
- Hong Zao 紅棗 (Dried Jujube fruit) – Dried jujube fruit that is full of iron.
- Yi Yi Ren 薏苡仁 (Pearl Barley) – Good for digestion and balancing body fluid. It is a great natural snack for all ages.
- Glutenous rice flour
- Warm water
Preparation
Peel the fresh Shan Yao and clean them in running water before steaming for 30 mins. Mesh the steamed Shan Yao with glutenous rice flour and warm water while hot to make a soft dough.
While the Shan Yao is steaming, remove the pits from Hong Zao and mesh them into paste, add grinded barley and make into balls at the size of a 1cm diameter.
Wrap the red date balls with the Shan Yao dough and steam for 30 mins. Ready to serve!
