Liu Wei Di Huang Wan (Six Ingredient Rehmannia Pill) is the most important formula for nourishing Kidney Yin in TCM. Originally created by the Song Dynasty physician Qian Yi for childhood developmental issues, it has become one of the most widely prescribed formulas in Chinese medicine for adults with Kidney and Liver Yin deficiency. Its elegant six-herb composition embodies a classical design principle: three tonifying herbs and three draining herbs, creating a balanced formula that nourishes without cloying.
The three tonifying herbs are: Shu Di Huang (prepared Rehmannia, 24g) — the sovereign, nourishing Kidney Yin and Jing; Shan Zhu Yu (Cornus fruit, 12g) — nourishing the Liver and astringing Jing; and Shan Yao (Dioscorea/Chinese yam, 12g) — tonifying the Spleen and stabilising the Kidneys. The three draining herbs are: Ze Xie (Alisma, 9g) — draining Kidney fire and preventing Shu Di Huang from causing stagnation; Mu Dan Pi (Moutan bark, 9g) — clearing Liver heat and invigorating Blood; and Fu Ling (Poria, 9g) — draining Dampness and supporting the Spleen. The 8:4:3 dosage ratio is critical to the formula's balance.
Liu Wei Di Huang Wan treats Kidney and Liver Yin deficiency manifesting as low back soreness, weak knees, dizziness, tinnitus, night sweats, afternoon heat, dry mouth, and a red tongue with little coating. It has spawned numerous derivatives: adding Gou Qi Zi and Ju Hua creates Qi Ju Di Huang Wan for eye problems; adding Zhi Mu and Huang Bai creates Zhi Bai Di Huang Wan for stronger deficiency heat; adding Mai Dong and Wu Wei Zi creates Mai Wei Di Huang Wan for Lung Yin deficiency. Each modification extends the base formula to address specific clinical needs.
Liu Wei Di Huang Wan nourishes Kidney and Liver Yin for symptoms including low back weakness, dizziness, tinnitus, night sweats, dry mouth, and afternoon heat sensations. It uses three tonifying and three draining herbs in precise ratio to nourish without causing stagnation. It is the base formula for an entire family of Yin-nourishing prescriptions.
Since Yin is a dense substance that replenishes slowly, Liu Wei Di Huang Wan is typically taken for weeks to months. Patent pill forms are taken daily as a gentle tonic. Results are gradual — night sweats and heat sensations may improve within weeks, while deeper Yin replenishment takes longer. A practitioner should periodically reassess to confirm continued appropriateness.
