Acupuncture with Dr Josephine Zhuo (TCM) · Traditional Chinese Medicine Sydney
Foot pain from conditions such as plantar fasciitis, heel spurs, metatarsalgia, Morton's neuroma, Achilles tendinopathy, and general foot fatigue can be effectively treated with acupuncture. As one of the most ancient natural treatments available for musculoskeletal pain, acupuncture addresses both the local inflammation and pain and the broader patterns of tension and imbalance that contribute to foot problems.
Acupuncture for foot pain works through several mechanisms: it stimulates the release of natural pain-relieving chemicals, increases blood flow to promote tissue healing, reduces localised inflammation, and releases tension in the muscles and fascia of the foot and lower leg. For conditions like plantar fasciitis — where the thick band of tissue on the sole of the foot becomes inflamed — acupuncture can provide significant relief, particularly when combined with stretching and appropriate footwear.
In TCM, chronic foot pain often relates to Kidney Qi deficiency (the Kidney meridian originates at the sole of the foot), Blood stasis from old injury, or Damp-Cold invasion affecting the lower limbs. The treatment approach addresses both the local symptoms and the underlying constitutional pattern. Points on the foot, ankle, and lower leg are combined with distal points to promote circulation and relieve pain.
Patients who have tried orthotics, anti-inflammatory medications, or cortisone injections without lasting relief often find acupuncture provides the additional support needed for recovery. Josephine may also incorporate moxa therapy (gentle heat application) for Cold-type pain or cupping on the calf muscles to release tension that contributes to foot strain. Most patients experience improvement within four to six sessions.
