Acupuncture for Digestive Health

Digestive complaints — including bloating, constipation, diarrhoea, acid reflux, irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), nausea, and abdominal pain — are among the most common conditions treated with acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine. The digestive system is central to TCM theory, where the Spleen and Stomach are considered the foundation of post-natal health, responsible for transforming food into Qi and Blood that nourish the entire body.

Acupuncture supports digestive function by regulating the gut-brain axis and balancing the autonomic nervous system. An overactive stress response suppresses digestive activity — a major contributing factor for many people with chronic gut issues. By activating the parasympathetic nervous system, acupuncture helps restore normal gut motility, reduce visceral hypersensitivity, and improve the coordination of digestive processes. This mechanism explains why many patients with stress-related digestive problems respond particularly well to treatment.

In TCM, digestive issues are classified according to the specific pattern of disharmony. For example, bloating and loose stools typically point to Spleen Qi deficiency, acid reflux suggests Stomach Heat or Liver Qi invading the Stomach, and alternating constipation and diarrhoea may indicate Liver-Spleen disharmony (common in IBS). This differentiation ensures that treatment is targeted to your particular presentation rather than applying a generic protocol.

Chinese herbal medicine is especially effective for digestive conditions and is commonly prescribed alongside acupuncture. Herbal formulas can tonify weak digestion, clear excess heat, resolve food stagnation, or harmonise the Liver and Spleen depending on the diagnosis. Dietary recommendations based on TCM principles — such as eating warm, cooked foods, avoiding raw and cold foods when digestion is weak, and eating at regular times — form an important part of the treatment strategy.
