Acupuncture with Dr Josephine Zhuo (TCM) · Traditional Chinese Medicine Sydney
Amenorrhea — the absence of menstruation — can be caused by a range of factors including stress, hormonal imbalance, excessive exercise, low body weight, or conditions such as polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS). While Western medicine often addresses this with hormonal contraceptives, Traditional Chinese Medicine takes a different approach by examining the whole body to identify the underlying pattern of disharmony.
In TCM, amenorrhea is commonly associated with Blood deficiency, Kidney Qi deficiency, or Liver Qi stagnation. Acupuncture treatment focuses on nourishing Blood, strengthening the Kidney system, and promoting the smooth flow of Qi throughout the body. Specific acupuncture points are selected to stimulate blood flow to the uterus and ovaries, encourage hormonal regulation, and restore the body's natural menstrual rhythm.
Chinese herbal medicine is often used alongside acupuncture to support the treatment. Herbal formulas are tailored to each patient's constitution and may include herbs traditionally used to tonify Blood, warm the uterus, or move stagnant Qi. Dietary and lifestyle recommendations — such as reducing cold foods, managing stress, and ensuring adequate rest — are also part of a holistic treatment plan.
Treatment duration varies depending on the underlying cause and how long the condition has persisted. Many patients begin to see improvement within two to three menstrual cycles of consistent weekly treatment. Josephine will work with you to develop an individualised plan and monitor your progress throughout.
