Traditional Chinese Medicine for Edgecliff
Josephine treats a wide variety of issues, including acute muscle pains and also more complex health conditions that may have accompanied a patient for many years.
Your first visit will usually include a consultation similar to that of visiting your GP in a private consultation room, where you can discuss your health concerns and the reason for your visit.
You will also be asked a series of questions in relation to your health to gain a clear picture of your past and present health condition. Diagnostic techniques used by a TCM practitioner will usually include checking your pulse and observation of your tongue.
Yin-Yang theory is the most fundamental concept in Chinese medicine, forming the philosophical foundation upon which all diagnosis and treatment rests. Yin and Yang represent two complementary, interdependent forces present in all natural phenomena. Yin qualities include coolness, rest, interior, substance, and nourishment. Yang qualities include warmth, activity, exterior, function, and transformation.
In the body, Yin corresponds to Blood, body fluids, tissue structure, and the calming, cooling aspects of organ function. Yang corresponds to Qi, warmth, metabolic activity, and the dynamic, transforming functions. Health exists when Yin and Yang are in relative balance — not static equilibrium, but a dynamic interplay that shifts naturally with time of day, season, age, and activity.
Disease arises when this balance is disrupted: excess Yang produces heat signs (fever, inflammation, restlessness), while excess Yin produces cold signs (chills, lethargy, fluid retention). Deficient Yang leads to cold, weakness, and poor metabolism, while deficient Yin causes dryness, heat sensations, and night sweats. Every TCM diagnosis ultimately identifies whether Yin or Yang — or both — are disturbed, guiding treatment strategy.
Health in TCM is understood as the dynamic balance between Yin (cooling, nourishing, structural) and Yang (warming, activating, functional) forces. Disease occurs when one aspect becomes excessive or deficient relative to the other, producing characteristic symptom patterns that guide diagnosis and treatment.
Yin deficiency means insufficient cooling, moistening substance — producing symptoms like night sweats, dry throat, heat in the palms, and restlessness. Yang deficiency means insufficient warming, activating force — producing cold limbs, fatigue, pale complexion, loose stools, and low energy. Treatment approaches differ significantly for each.

Edgecliff is a small suburb in the Eastern Suburbs of Sydney, in the state of New South Wales, Australia. Edgecliff is located 4 kilometres east of the Sydney central business district, in the local government area of the Municipality of Woollahra. The postcode is 2027. Edgecliff is surrounded by the suburbs of Double Bay, Woollahra, Paddington, Rushcutters Bay and Darling Point. The property prices are very high because it is close to the city and many homes provide views of Port Jackson (Sydney Habour). Edgecliff takes its name from its location because it literally sits on the edge of a cliff. The rocky cliff was extensively quarried in the early day of European settlement. The area was dominated for some time by the Glenrock property, on the north side of New South Head Road. Sir Edward Knox built Fiona in 1864 after having it designed by J.F.Hilly. It has been described as "a Classical Revival two-storey mansion" and was made of sandstone. Other elements of the estate included Glenrock, an Italianate residence designed by David MacBeath and built by John Marks circa 1870. There were also substantial gates of wrought iron and sandstone. The building was demolished when New South Head Road was widened, but the gates survived. Also on the estate was the Dower House, a Victorian Gothic Revival house of sandstone, built some time after 1842 by Whistler Smith. The estate is now the site of Ascham School, and the above items are on the National Estate.
