Si Jun Zi Tang: The Four Gentlemen Decoction

Si Jun Zi Tang (Four Gentlemen Decoction) is the foundational formula for Qi deficiency in TCM and one of the most important base prescriptions in the entire Chinese herbal tradition. Dating from the Song Dynasty text Tai Ping Hui Min He Ji Ju Fang (1107 CE), it contains just four herbs: Ren Shen (Panax ginseng) 9g, Bai Zhu (Atractylodes macrocephala) 9g, Fu Ling (Poria cocos) 9g, and Zhi Gan Cao (honey-processed licorice) 6g. The name "Four Gentlemen" reflects the herbs' gentle, cooperative nature — they work together harmoniously without harsh or aggressive action.

The formula directly addresses Spleen Qi deficiency — the pattern underlying fatigue, poor appetite, loose stools, weak voice, and a pale tongue. Ren Shen powerfully tonifies Qi as the sovereign herb. Bai Zhu strengthens the Spleen and dries Dampness as the minister. Fu Ling drains Dampness and supports the Spleen as an assistant. Zhi Gan Cao tonifies Qi and harmonises the other herbs as the envoy. Together, they restore the Spleen's ability to transform food into Qi and Blood.

Si Jun Zi Tang's true clinical significance lies in its role as a building block. Adding Chen Pi (tangerine peel) creates Liu Jun Zi Tang (Six Gentlemen Decoction) for Qi deficiency with Phlegm. Adding Huang Qi and Dang Gui creates Ba Zhen Tang (Eight Treasure Decoction) for combined Qi and Blood deficiency. Bu Zhong Yi Qi Tang and Gui Pi Tang are both derivatives. Understanding Si Jun Zi Tang is therefore key to understanding an entire family of tonifying formulas — each built by adding herbs to address the specific complications surrounding the core pattern of Qi deficiency.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Si Jun Zi Tang used for?

Si Jun Zi Tang (Four Gentlemen Decoction) is the base formula for Spleen Qi deficiency. It treats fatigue, poor appetite, loose stools, weak voice, and overall weakness. Its four herbs — ginseng, atractylodes, poria, and licorice — gently restore the Spleen's digestive function and Qi production. It is the foundation for many other tonifying formulas.

Can I buy Si Jun Zi Tang over the counter?

Si Jun Zi Tang is available as a patent medicine (pills, capsules, or granules) at Chinese medicine pharmacies. While it is a gentle formula, self-prescribing without proper diagnosis may be ineffective if Qi deficiency is not your actual pattern. A qualified herbalist can confirm the diagnosis and modify the formula to suit your specific needs.
