Gui Pi Tang: The Restore the Spleen Decoction

Gui Pi Tang (Restore the Spleen Decoction) is a masterful formula that simultaneously tonifies Qi and Blood while calming the Shen (spirit). Created during the Song Dynasty and later expanded by the Ming Dynasty physician Xue Ji, it targets a specific pattern: Heart Blood and Spleen Qi deficiency — where weakened Spleen function fails to produce adequate Blood, and the resulting Blood deficiency leaves the Heart Shen unanchored. This dual deficiency pattern is extremely common in patients who are overworked, anxious, and exhausted.

The formula contains twelve herbs: Ren Shen (ginseng, 9g), Huang Qi (Astragalus, 12g), Bai Zhu (Atractylodes, 9g), and Zhi Gan Cao (licorice, 6g) form a Qi-tonifying core. Dang Gui (Angelica, 9g) and Long Yan Rou (longan fruit, 12g) nourish Heart Blood. Suan Zao Ren (jujube seed, 12g), Fu Shen (Poria around the root, 9g), and Yuan Zhi (Polygala, 6g) calm the Shen and improve sleep. Mu Xiang (Aucklandia, 6g) regulates Qi to prevent stagnation from the heavy tonifying herbs. Sheng Jiang (ginger, 3g) and Da Zao (jujube, 3 pieces) harmonise the formula.

Gui Pi Tang is indicated for insomnia with difficulty falling asleep, excessive dreaming, anxiety, palpitations, poor memory, fatigue, poor appetite, pallor, and in women, prolonged menstrual periods or spotting between periods (the Spleen failing to hold Blood in the vessels). It is one of the few formulas that effectively addresses both the physical exhaustion and the mental-emotional distress that often accompany each other — making it highly relevant for the modern condition of burnout.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Gui Pi Tang used for?

Gui Pi Tang treats combined Heart Blood and Spleen Qi deficiency — manifesting as insomnia, anxiety, palpitations, poor memory, fatigue, poor appetite, and abnormal bleeding. It simultaneously tonifies Qi, nourishes Blood, and calms the spirit. It is particularly suited for overworked, anxious patients who are both physically and mentally exhausted.

Can Gui Pi Tang help with insomnia?

Gui Pi Tang is one of the most effective formulas for insomnia caused by Heart Blood deficiency — particularly when the person has difficulty falling asleep, has vivid dreams, and wakes feeling unrefreshed. It works by nourishing Heart Blood (giving the Shen a "home") while strengthening the Spleen (improving Blood production). It addresses the root cause rather than simply sedating.
