Acupuncture for Hip Bursitis (Trochanteric Bursitis)

Hip bursitis — inflammation of the bursa over the greater trochanter — causes lateral hip pain that worsens with walking, climbing stairs, and lying on the affected side. In TCM, the lateral hip is traversed by the Gallbladder channel, and hip bursitis represents Qi and Blood stagnation in this channel, often with Damp accumulation in the bursa. The condition frequently develops alongside tight iliotibial band and gluteal weakness.

The primary point is GB30 (Huantiao), one of the most important acupuncture points for hip disorders, located near the greater trochanter. GB29 (Juliao) lies directly over the trochanteric bursa. GB31 (Fengshi) on the lateral thigh addresses the IT band, and GB34 (Yanglingquan) — the Influential point for sinews — relaxes the surrounding musculature. Ashi points at the specific area of bursal inflammation are needled with care to avoid directly penetrating the inflamed bursa.

Electroacupuncture between GB29 and GB30 provides effective anti-inflammatory stimulation. Treatment also addresses contributing factors: gluteal muscle weakness through BL54 (Zhibian) and IT band tightness through the lateral leg points. Moxibustion may be added if Cold-Damp is the pattern. Six to ten sessions typically produce substantial improvement, with patients advised to avoid side-sleeping on the affected hip during treatment.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where does the acupuncturist needle for hip bursitis?

Points are placed near the greater trochanter (GB29 and GB30), along the lateral thigh (GB31), and at the knee level (GB34). Needles are positioned near but not directly into the inflamed bursa. The Gallbladder channel runs along the entire lateral hip and leg, providing multiple access points for treatment.

How long does acupuncture take to help hip bursitis?

Most patients notice reduced pain within three to four sessions, with substantial improvement by six to ten treatments. Chronic bursitis that has persisted for months may require a longer course. Avoiding aggravating activities like side-sleeping on the affected hip supports faster recovery.
