Sarcopenia and Acupuncture

Sarcopenia is the progressive loss of skeletal muscle mass, strength, and function associated with ageing. Beginning around age 30, adults lose approximately 3-8% of muscle mass per decade, accelerating after age 60. Sarcopenia increases the risk of falls, fractures, loss of independence, and mortality.

TCM relates sarcopenia to spleen qi deficiency, as the spleen governs the muscles and flesh. Kidney essence (jing) deficiency also contributes, as jing governs structural integrity. Treatment strengthens the spleen using ST-36 (Zusanli), SP-6 (Sanyinjiao), and CV-12 (Zhongwan). BL-20 (Pishu) and BL-23 (Shenshu) tonify spleen and kidney from the back-shu points. Electroacupuncture at motor points can directly stimulate muscle fibres and promote neuromuscular function.

A 2020 study in Frontiers in Medicine found that electroacupuncture combined with resistance training improved lean muscle mass, grip strength, and walking speed in older adults more effectively than exercise alone.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can acupuncture help with age-related muscle loss?

Acupuncture can support muscle preservation by improving nutrient absorption, stimulating neuromuscular connections, and modulating hormones. Electroacupuncture at motor points enhances muscle activation. However, it is most effective as a complement to resistance exercise and adequate protein intake.

What does TCM say about muscle weakness in older age?

TCM attributes age-related muscle weakness primarily to declining spleen qi, which impairs the ability to nourish muscles from food. Kidney essence depletion also contributes. Treatment focuses on strengthening digestion and kidney vitality.
