Acupuncture for Miscarriage Prevention (Threatened Miscarriage)

Recurrent or threatened miscarriage affects approximately 15-20% of known pregnancies. In TCM, miscarriage relates to Kidney deficiency — the Kidney is responsible for "grasping" the foetus and maintaining pregnancy. Spleen Qi deficiency (failing to hold Blood) and Blood Heat (causing reckless Blood movement) are other common patterns. The classical term "restless foetus syndrome" encompasses spotting, cramping, and threatened miscarriage.

Treatment in early pregnancy uses carefully selected safe points. CV4 (Guanyuan) and KI9 (Zhubin) — traditionally known as the "beautiful baby point" — strengthen the Kidney's holding function. ST36 (Zusanli) and SP1 (Yinbai) tonify Spleen Qi and stop bleeding. DU20 (Baihui) lifts Qi to prevent downward loss. Moxibustion at ST36 and CV4 adds warming support. Importantly, several points are contraindicated during pregnancy, including SP6, LI4, BL60, and all lower abdominal points with strong downward-moving action.

Acupuncture for threatened miscarriage is most effective when started early and continued through the first trimester. Treatment is gentle, using thin needles with minimal stimulation. Many practitioners see patients weekly through week 12-14 for pregnancy support.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is acupuncture safe during pregnancy for miscarriage prevention?

Yes, when performed by a practitioner trained in pregnancy acupuncture. Specific contraindicated points are avoided, and gentle needling techniques are used. Points like KI9, ST36, and DU20 are considered safe and traditionally used to support early pregnancy.

Which acupuncture points are forbidden during pregnancy?

Points traditionally contraindicated in pregnancy include SP6 (Sanyinjiao), LI4 (Hegu), BL60 (Kunlun), BL67 (Zhiyin), and strongly descending abdominal points. These are believed to have downward-moving or labour-inducing effects. A qualified practitioner knows which points are safe at each stage.
