Acupuncture for IVF Implantation Support

Acupuncture is widely used alongside IVF to improve implantation rates. The landmark 2002 Paulus study in Fertility and Sterility showed clinical pregnancy rates of 42.5% with acupuncture versus 26.3% without when administered before and after embryo transfer. In TCM, successful implantation requires adequate Kidney Yang to warm the uterus, sufficient Blood to nourish the endometrium, and smooth Qi flow to prevent uterine spasm.

The standard protocol involves treatment before and after embryo transfer. Pre-transfer points include SP8 (Diji), LR3 (Taichong), and ST29 (Guilai) to improve uterine blood flow and calm the uterus. Post-transfer points shift to GV20 (Baihui) and HT7 (Shenmen) for calming, with SP6 (Sanyinjiao) and ST36 (Zusanli) to support implantation. Ear points Shenmen and Zigong (Uterus) are used in both sessions.

Many fertility clinics now offer on-site acupuncture for embryo transfer day. Treatment in the weeks leading up to transfer focuses on building endometrial thickness through improved uterine artery blood flow. Post-transfer acupuncture supports the luteal phase and reduces anxiety that may negatively affect implantation.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does acupuncture really improve IVF success rates?

The influential 2002 Paulus study showed significantly higher pregnancy rates with acupuncture around embryo transfer. Subsequent meta-analyses have produced mixed results, but many fertility specialists recommend it as a low-risk adjunct that may improve outcomes and reduces treatment-related stress.

When should acupuncture be done during IVF?

The most studied protocol involves acupuncture 25 minutes before and after embryo transfer. Many practitioners also recommend weekly sessions during the stimulation phase and through the first trimester to support the pregnancy.
