Premature Ovarian Insufficiency and Acupuncture

Premature ovarian insufficiency (POI) describes the loss of normal ovarian function before age 40, presenting with irregular or absent periods and elevated FSH levels. Unlike natural menopause, POI can be intermittent, with approximately 5-10% of women experiencing spontaneous pregnancies after diagnosis.

TCM attributes POI primarily to kidney essence (jing) deficiency, as the kidneys govern reproductive development through the Tian Gui concept. Treatment aims to nourish kidney yin and essence using points such as KI-3 (Taixi), KI-6 (Zhaohai), CV-4 (Guanyuan), and SP-6 (Sanyinjiao). BL-23 (Shenshu) and BL-52 (Zhishi) tonify kidney yang to maintain the balance required for ovulation.

Research published in Gynecological Endocrinology (2019) demonstrated that electroacupuncture could modulate hypothalamic-pituitary-ovarian axis function, with treated patients showing reduced FSH levels and improved menstrual regularity over a six-month treatment period.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can acupuncture help premature ovarian insufficiency?

Acupuncture may support ovarian function by modulating hormone levels through the hypothalamic-pituitary-ovarian axis. Some studies have shown improvements in FSH levels, menstrual regularity, and follicular development with regular treatment. It is used as a complementary approach alongside hormone replacement therapy.

What is the TCM view of premature ovarian insufficiency?

TCM considers POI a manifestation of depleted kidney essence (jing), the fundamental substance governing growth, development, and reproduction. Treatment focuses on replenishing kidney yin and yang, strengthening the Chong and Ren meridians, and nourishing blood to support follicular development.
