Peripheral neuropathy — nerve damage causing numbness, tingling, burning pain, and weakness in the hands and feet — has many causes including diabetes, chemotherapy, and autoimmune conditions. TCM views neuropathy as a combination of Qi and Blood deficiency failing to nourish the extremities, often with concurrent Dampness or Phlegm obstructing the channels and preventing proper nerve function.
Treatment uses both local and distal points along the affected channels. For foot neuropathy, LR3 (Taichong), ST41 (Jiexi), SP6 (Sanyinjiao), and Ba Feng (extra points between the toes) stimulate nerve regeneration and improve microcirculation. ST36 (Zusanli) and SP10 (Xuehai) tonify Qi and Blood to nourish the peripheral nerves. A 2007 pilot study in the European Journal of Neurology demonstrated improved nerve conduction velocities following acupuncture treatment.
Electroacupuncture at low frequencies (2Hz) is particularly valuable for neuropathy as it promotes nerve growth factor release. Treatment courses are typically longer — twelve to twenty sessions — reflecting the slow pace of nerve regeneration. Patients with diabetic neuropathy also benefit from concurrent blood sugar management.
Acupuncture can improve symptoms and nerve conduction in peripheral neuropathy. While severely damaged nerves may not fully regenerate, acupuncture promotes nerve growth factor release and improves microcirculation, which supports partial nerve recovery and significant symptom relief.
Acupuncture stimulates blood flow and nerve activity in the extremities using local points between the toes or fingers, combined with points that tonify Qi and Blood. Electroacupuncture at low frequency further promotes nerve repair and reduces numbness over time.
