Acupuncture for Golfer's Elbow (Medial Epicondylitis)

Golfer's elbow involves pain and inflammation at the medial epicondyle where the wrist flexor tendons attach. Unlike tennis elbow on the lateral side, golfer's elbow affects the Heart and Pericardium channels in TCM. The condition relates to Qi and Blood stagnation along the medial forearm, often compounded by overuse, repetitive gripping, or Cold-Damp invasion of the joint.

Key treatment points include HT3 (Shaohai) at the medial elbow crease, PC3 (Quze), and local Ashi points at the epicondyle. The practitioner may add SI8 (Xiaohai) to address the ulnar nerve region and LI4 (Hegu) to promote overall upper limb circulation. Warm needle moxibustion is particularly effective here, as the Heat penetrates the tendon attachment and disperses Cold stagnation.

Clinical experience shows golfer's elbow often responds faster to acupuncture than lateral epicondylitis because the medial tendons have slightly better blood supply. Six to ten sessions typically produce substantial improvement when combined with forearm stretching and gradual return to activity.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between tennis elbow and golfer's elbow in acupuncture treatment?

Tennis elbow (lateral) involves the Large Intestine channel and extensor tendons, while golfer's elbow (medial) involves the Heart and Pericardium channels and flexor tendons. Different acupuncture points are selected accordingly, though both conditions involve local Qi and Blood stagnation.

Can acupuncture cure golfer's elbow permanently?

Acupuncture can help resolve golfer's elbow effectively, especially when combined with stretching and ergonomic changes. Recurrence depends on whether the repetitive strain causing it is addressed. Maintenance sessions may help prevent relapse.
