Panic Attacks and Acupuncture

Panic attacks are sudden episodes of intense fear accompanied by rapid heartbeat, chest tightness, shortness of breath, dizziness, tingling extremities, and a sense of impending doom. Panic disorder involves recurrent attacks combined with persistent worry about future episodes.

In TCM, panic attacks most commonly reflect heart and gallbladder qi deficiency, where the shen (spirit) becomes unsettled. The sudden onset reflects internal wind or counterflow qi rising to the chest and head. Treatment anchors the shen and descends counterflow qi using HT-7 (Shenmen), PC-6 (Neiguan, which calms the chest and regulates heart rhythm), and Yintang (the extra point between the eyebrows). GV-20 (Baihui) settles rising yang, while LR-3 (Taichong) subdues liver wind.

A 2018 trial in the Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine found that acupuncture significantly reduced panic attack frequency and anticipatory anxiety, with improvements in heart rate variability indicating restored autonomic balance.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can acupuncture stop panic attacks?

Acupuncture can reduce the frequency and severity of panic attacks by calming the autonomic nervous system. While it may not prevent every episode, regular treatment helps lower baseline anxiety, making attacks less likely to trigger. Acupressure on PC-6 (inner wrist) can be used as a self-help technique during an attack.

How is panic disorder different from general anxiety?

General anxiety involves persistent, ongoing worry, while panic disorder features sudden, discrete episodes of intense terror with prominent physical symptoms. Panic attacks come on abruptly and peak rapidly, whereas generalised anxiety is a constant low-to-moderate state of worry. TCM treats them with different point combinations.
