Post-Viral Fatigue Syndrome and Acupuncture

Post-viral fatigue syndrome (PVFS) describes persistent exhaustion lasting weeks to months following viral infections such as influenza, Epstein-Barr virus, or Ross River virus. Symptoms include debilitating fatigue not relieved by rest, cognitive difficulties, muscle aches, unrefreshing sleep, and post-exertional malaise.

TCM recognises this as residual pathogenic factor (liu xie) depleting the body's defensive qi and disrupting the spleen's ability to generate post-natal qi from food. Treatment prioritises tonifying spleen and lung qi using ST-36 (Zusanli), SP-3 (Taibai), and LU-9 (Taiyuan), while clearing residual dampness with SP-9 (Yinlingquan). GV-20 (Baihui) is used to lift yang qi and address mental fatigue.

A 2018 systematic review in BMC Complementary and Alternative Therapies evaluated acupuncture for post-infection fatigue and found consistent improvements in fatigue severity scores, sleep quality, and daily functioning across multiple trials.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can acupuncture help with fatigue after a viral illness?

Acupuncture can help manage post-viral fatigue by strengthening the immune system, improving energy production, and restoring sleep quality. Treatment focuses on rebuilding the body's depleted energy reserves rather than simply stimulating short-term alertness.

What is the difference between post-viral fatigue and chronic fatigue syndrome?

Post-viral fatigue has a clear viral trigger and typically resolves within three to six months with appropriate support. If symptoms persist beyond six months and meet specific diagnostic criteria, the condition may be reclassified as chronic fatigue syndrome (myalgic encephalomyelitis).
