Gastroparesis and Acupuncture

Gastroparesis is a condition where the stomach empties its contents abnormally slowly without any physical obstruction. Symptoms include nausea, vomiting of undigested food, early satiety, bloating, and upper abdominal pain. Common causes include diabetes and idiopathic cases where no cause is identified.

In TCM, gastroparesis corresponds to stomach qi failing to descend, often rooted in spleen qi deficiency and middle jiao cold. Treatment restores the descending function of stomach qi using ST-36 (Zusanli), CV-12 (Zhongwan) at the stomach alarm point, and PC-6 (Neiguan) for nausea. SP-4 (Gongsun), the opening point of the Chong Mai, addresses rebellious stomach qi. Moxibustion on CV-12 and ST-36 warms the middle jiao to promote motility.

Research at the Medical College of Wisconsin demonstrated that electroacupuncture at ST-36 accelerated gastric emptying by modulating vagal nerve activity and increasing gastric slow wave regularity.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can acupuncture improve stomach emptying?

Research shows electroacupuncture, particularly at ST-36, can accelerate gastric emptying by stimulating vagus nerve activity and restoring normal gastric electrical rhythm. Benefits are typically assessed after four to six weeks of regular treatment.

What is the TCM understanding of gastroparesis?

TCM views gastroparesis as a failure of stomach qi to perform its natural descending function, causing food to stagnate. The root cause often lies in spleen yang deficiency. Treatment strengthens spleen and stomach function while restoring the downward direction of digestive qi.
