Acupuncture supports osteoporosis management by addressing the underlying TCM patterns associated with bone loss and by promoting the body's bone-building processes. In TCM, the Kidneys govern the bones and produce marrow — Kidney Essence deficiency is the primary pattern behind osteoporosis. Key treatment points include BL11 (Dashu, the influential point for bones), BL23 (Shenshu), KI3 (Taixi), CV4 (Guanyuan), and GB39 (Xuanzhong, the influential point for marrow). Moxibustion is frequently added to warm Kidney Yang and support essence.
Research has explored acupuncture's effects on bone metabolism, with some studies showing increased serum oestrogen and calcitonin levels and decreased bone resorption markers following treatment courses. While acupuncture does not replace calcium, vitamin D, weight-bearing exercise, or osteoporosis medication, it can complement these by managing pain from osteoporotic fractures, improving balance and fall prevention (reducing fracture risk), supporting hormonal balance post-menopause, and strengthening muscles around vulnerable joints.
Those diagnosed with osteopenia or osteoporosis can integrate acupuncture into their bone health program, with particular benefit from combined acupuncture and moxibustion treatments targeting the Kidney and Bladder meridians.
Acupuncture alone cannot reverse osteoporosis, but it can be a valuable part of a comprehensive bone health strategy. TCM treatment supports the Kidney system (which governs bones), may help with calcium absorption and hormonal balance, and importantly, reduces fall risk through improved balance and muscle strength. It works alongside medication, exercise, and nutritional supplementation.
Yes. Acupuncture needles are very thin and do not penetrate bone. Standard needling technique is safe for osteoporosis patients. The only precaution relates to patients with severe spinal compression fractures — the practitioner may adjust positioning for comfort and avoid deep needling over severely affected vertebrae. Always inform your acupuncturist of your diagnosis.
