Shonishin — literally "children's needle" in Japanese — is a non-insertive acupuncture technique designed specifically for infants and young children. Instead of penetrating the skin, specialised tools are used to stroke, tap, and press along meridian pathways and acupuncture points. Rounded tools are pressed on points, spring-loaded tappers provide gentle percussion, and smooth-edged instruments stroke along channels. The technique is painless, with most children finding it pleasant and soothing.
Shonishin is effective for common paediatric complaints including colic and digestive disturbance, sleep disorders, frequent colds and ear infections, eczema, bedwetting (enuresis), and ADHD-type behavioural patterns. TCM considers children's Qi to be dynamic and responsive — their organ systems are immature but quickly influenced by treatment. The Spleen system is particularly susceptible in children, making digestive issues and poor appetite among the most responsive conditions. Sessions are brief (5-15 minutes) and treatment is typically performed 1-2 times per week.
Maroubra parents can feel confident that paediatric acupuncture offers a gentle, effective approach for their children. Older children (typically age 7+) who are comfortable may receive very fine needle insertion at select points, though Shonishin remains an option at any age.
Shonishin can be safely performed from birth onwards. It is commonly used for infants from a few weeks old. Needle-insertive acupuncture is typically introduced around age 7-10, depending on the child's comfort level, using very fine, short needles with brief retention times. Treatment is always adapted to the child's age, size, and temperament.
Shonishin tools stimulate the skin surface and superficial nerve receptors along meridian pathways. Children's Qi is considered to be more superficial and responsive than adults', so surface stimulation is sufficient to produce therapeutic effects. The stroking and tapping techniques influence the autonomic nervous system, promoting relaxation, improving digestion, and regulating immune function.
