Acupuncture has demonstrated potential in supporting blood pressure regulation, particularly for mild to moderate hypertension. The point LI11 (Quchi) has been extensively studied and shown to produce modest blood pressure reductions when stimulated regularly. Other key points include ST36 (Zusanli), LV3 (Taichong), and PC6 (Neiguan), which influence cardiovascular function through autonomic nervous system regulation.
TCM differentiates hypertension into several patterns. Liver Yang Rising — the most common — presents with headaches, dizziness, and irritability, treated by subduing Yang with LV3 (Taichong) and GB20 (Fengchi). Phlegm-Dampness causes hypertension with heaviness and foggy thinking, addressed through SP9 (Yinlingquan) and ST40 (Fenglong). Kidney Yin Deficiency produces hypertension with tinnitus and night sweats, requiring nourishment with KI3 (Taixi) and KI6 (Zhaohai). Each pattern requires different point prescriptions for optimal results.
Those with blood pressure concerns should note that acupuncture is a complementary approach — it does not replace antihypertensive medication prescribed by their GP. Regular blood pressure monitoring should continue throughout treatment.
Clinical studies report modest reductions of approximately 5-10 mmHg systolic and 3-5 mmHg diastolic with regular acupuncture treatment. While this is meaningful, it is generally insufficient as a sole treatment for significant hypertension. Acupuncture works best as a complement to lifestyle modifications and medication as needed.
Typically, twice-weekly sessions for 4-6 weeks are recommended initially, tapering to weekly then fortnightly maintenance. Consistent treatment produces better results than sporadic sessions. Blood pressure should be monitored at home between sessions to track changes.
