Acupuncture addresses hair loss by improving scalp circulation, reducing inflammation, and treating the underlying constitutional factors that contribute to thinning hair. Local scalp points such as GV20 (Baihui) and surrounding "Seven Star" points are needled or stimulated with a plum blossom (seven-star) hammer to increase blood flow to hair follicles. Electroacupuncture applied to the scalp may further enhance microcirculation in the dermal papilla.
In TCM, hair is considered the "extension of Blood" and is nourished by the Kidney essence. Hair loss patterns are differentiated accordingly: sudden patchy loss (alopecia areata) often involves Blood Deficiency with Wind, treated with BL17 (Geshu), GB20 (Fengchi), and SP10 (Xuehai). Gradual diffuse thinning relates to Kidney Essence decline, addressed with KI3 (Taixi), BL23 (Shenshu), and CV4 (Guanyuan). Oily scalp with hair loss suggests Damp-Heat, treated with SP9 (Yinlingquan) and LI11 (Quchi).
Those experiencing hair loss should note that acupuncture works best when started early in the thinning process, as dormant follicles are more responsive than those that have been inactive for years.
Hair growth is slow — new growth typically becomes visible after 3-6 months of consistent treatment, with sessions usually weekly or fortnightly. The hair growth cycle means results are gradual. Treatment also aims to slow further loss, which may be noticeable sooner than regrowth.
The plum blossom needle is a small hammer with seven short needles that is tapped gently on the scalp to create superficial stimulation without penetrating deeply. This increases blood flow to the scalp, stimulates hair follicles, and can be combined with topical herbal solutions. It is commonly used for alopecia areata and diffuse thinning.
