Acupuncture for Menstrual Irregularity and Period Pain

Dysmenorrhoea (painful periods) affects up to 90% of young women and is a leading cause of absenteeism from work and school. A Cochrane Review (2016) evaluating 42 trials found that acupuncture reduced menstrual pain intensity and improved quality of life compared to no treatment, NSAIDs, or Chinese herbal medicine alone.

TCM views the menstrual cycle as a reflection of the balance between Qi, Blood, Yin, and Yang — governed primarily by the Liver, Spleen, and Kidney organ systems. Period pain is most commonly caused by Liver Qi stagnation leading to Blood stasis, which creates the cramping, clotting, and premenstrual tension many women experience. Cold in the uterus (from Kidney Yang deficiency or exposure to cold) is another frequent cause, producing pain that responds to warmth.

Treatment is tailored to the menstrual phase. During menstruation, points such as SP6 (Sanyinjiao), SP8 (Diji), and LR3 (Taichong) move Blood and relieve cramping. In the follicular phase, tonifying points build Blood for the next cycle. Moxibustion on CV4 (Guanyuan) is particularly effective for Cold-pattern period pain, providing warmth directly to the lower abdomen and uterus.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can acupuncture help painful periods?

Yes. A Cochrane Review of 42 trials found acupuncture significantly reduced menstrual pain intensity. It works by improving blood flow to the uterus, reducing prostaglandin-mediated cramping, and addressing the underlying hormonal or energetic imbalance causing the pain.

Why does TCM use moxibustion for period pain?

Moxibustion involves burning dried mugwort near specific points to generate warmth. It is particularly effective for period pain caused by Cold in the uterus — characterised by cramping that improves with a hot water bottle. The warmth penetrates deeply to dispel Cold and promote blood flow.

How does acupuncture regulate irregular periods?

Acupuncture influences the hypothalamic-pituitary-ovarian axis, helping to regulate hormonal cycles naturally. TCM treatment strengthens the organ systems (Kidney, Liver, Spleen) that govern menstruation. Most women see improvement in cycle regularity within three to four months of weekly treatment.
