Carpal tunnel syndrome causes numbness, tingling, and pain in the hand due to compression of the median nerve at the wrist. A study published in Brain (2017) — a leading neurology journal — used functional MRI to demonstrate that acupuncture produced measurable changes in the brain's somatosensory cortex and improved median nerve function in carpal tunnel patients, providing objective neurological evidence for its effectiveness.
TCM views carpal tunnel as stagnation of Qi and Blood in the Pericardium and Lung channels that pass through the wrist. PC7 (Daling), located at the centre of the wrist crease directly over the carpal tunnel, is the primary local point. It is combined with PC6 (Neiguan) on the forearm and distal points to promote Qi flow through the affected channel. LI4 (Hegu) addresses pain and inflammation in the hand, while SJ5 (Waiguan) on the outer forearm treats the complementary channel.
Treatment aims to reduce swelling within the carpal tunnel, improve nerve conduction, and relieve the night-time numbness that disrupts sleep. Electroacupuncture between PC7 and PC6 is commonly used to enhance nerve stimulation. Many patients experience significant improvement within eight to twelve sessions, potentially avoiding the need for surgery.
Yes. A 2017 study in the journal Brain used functional MRI to show that acupuncture improved median nerve function and produced measurable brain changes in carpal tunnel patients. It can reduce numbness, tingling, and pain while potentially helping patients avoid surgery.
The primary point is PC7 (Daling) at the centre of the wrist crease, directly over the carpal tunnel. Additional needles are placed at PC6 (Neiguan) on the forearm, LI4 (Hegu) on the hand, and sometimes at distal points on the ankle that correspond to the wrist through channel theory.
Most patients notice improvement within four to six sessions, with significant results typically achieved over eight to twelve sessions. Mild to moderate carpal tunnel responds best. For severe cases with muscle wasting, medical evaluation for surgery may still be necessary.
