Lateral epicondylitis (tennis elbow) is a common overuse injury causing pain on the outer elbow that can persist for months or years. A randomised controlled trial published in Rheumatology (2004) found that acupuncture produced significantly greater pain relief and grip strength improvement than sham acupuncture in patients with chronic tennis elbow, with effects lasting beyond the treatment period.
In TCM, tennis elbow falls under the category of Bi Syndrome — painful obstruction of the channels. Repetitive strain causes local Qi and Blood stagnation in the Large Intestine and Triple Energiser meridians that traverse the outer elbow. Key treatment points include LI11 (Quchi) and LI10 (Shousanli) near the affected area, along with Ashi points (tender spots identified by palpation). Distal points such as ST38 (Tiaokou) on the opposite leg may be used based on channel correspondence principles.
Electroacupuncture at the elbow has shown particular benefit for tendon healing, as the electrical stimulation promotes collagen synthesis and increases local blood circulation. Treatment is typically combined with rest from aggravating activities and gentle eccentric strengthening exercises. Most patients respond within six to eight sessions.
Acupuncture reduces inflammation at the outer elbow, promotes blood flow to the damaged tendon, and stimulates tissue repair. A 2004 study in Rheumatology found it significantly improved pain and grip strength. Electroacupuncture can further enhance healing by promoting collagen production in the tendon.
Ashi points are tender spots found by palpating the affected area — they are not fixed points on a meridian chart but are located wherever pain concentrates. The term means "that's it!" in Chinese, reflecting the patient's reaction when the practitioner finds the tender spot. They are commonly used in pain treatment.
Yes. Acupuncture is effective for various repetitive strain injuries including tennis elbow, golfer's elbow, and wrist tendonitis. It reduces inflammation, breaks up adhesions in the soft tissue, and promotes healing of the damaged tendons by improving local circulation and reducing pain signalling.
