Poor sleep affects approximately one in three Australian adults, and acupuncture has been increasingly studied as a non-pharmaceutical intervention. A meta-analysis published in the Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine (2009) found that acupuncture improved sleep quality scores significantly, and when combined with medication, performed better than medication alone.
In TCM, sleep is governed by the Shen — the spirit housed in the Heart. When the Heart Blood is deficient or disturbed by excess Heat or Phlegm, the Shen cannot settle at night, resulting in difficulty falling asleep, vivid dreams, or waking in the early hours. The point HT7 (Shenmen, meaning "Spirit Gate") is the primary point for calming the Shen, while Anmian (an extra point behind the ear meaning "Peaceful Sleep") directly promotes sedation.
Treatment also addresses the root cause: Kidney Yin deficiency may cause night sweats and restlessness, while Spleen Qi deficiency leads to overthinking and an inability to switch off mentally. Auricular (ear) acupuncture is frequently used alongside body acupuncture for insomnia, with small press-tack needles left in the ear between sessions to extend the treatment effect.
Yes. Research has shown that acupuncture improves sleep quality by calming the nervous system and promoting the body's natural melatonin production. It addresses different types of insomnia — difficulty falling asleep, frequent waking, or early morning waking — by treating the specific underlying imbalance.
HT7 Shenmen ("Spirit Gate") is located on the inner wrist crease and is one of the most important acupuncture points for calming the mind. It is used to treat insomnia, anxiety, palpitations, and emotional distress by settling the Heart spirit (Shen) in TCM.
Auricular acupuncture targets specific points on the ear that correspond to the brain and nervous system. Small semi-permanent needles or seeds can be left in place between sessions, allowing patients to stimulate these calming points at bedtime by pressing gently on them.
