Anxiety disorders are among the most common mental health conditions in Australia, and acupuncture offers a drug-free treatment approach with growing evidence. A meta-analysis published in the Journal of Acupuncture and Meridian Studies (2018) found that acupuncture significantly reduced anxiety symptoms compared to control groups, with effects comparable to cognitive behavioural therapy in some trials.
From a TCM perspective, anxiety often stems from Heart and Kidney disharmony or Liver Qi stagnation. When Qi becomes stuck — often due to chronic stress — it generates internal heat that disturbs the Shen (spirit), leading to restlessness, worry, and insomnia. Treatment targets points such as HT7 (Shenmen) to calm the Heart, PC6 (Neiguan) to ease chest tightness and palpitations, and Yintang (the "third eye" point between the eyebrows) to settle the mind.
Many patients report feeling deeply relaxed during treatment as acupuncture activates the parasympathetic nervous system. Research suggests this occurs partly through modulation of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis, reducing cortisol output and promoting a sustained sense of calm between sessions.
Acupuncture activates the parasympathetic nervous system and helps regulate the stress response by modulating cortisol levels. It also promotes the release of endorphins and other neurotransmitters that improve mood and reduce the physical symptoms of anxiety such as muscle tension and rapid heartbeat.
Many patients feel noticeably calmer after their first session. However, for sustained anxiety reduction, a course of six to ten weekly sessions is typically recommended. The effects tend to be cumulative, with each session building on the last.
Acupuncture can be used alongside medication or as a standalone treatment for mild to moderate anxiety. Any changes to medication should always be discussed with your prescribing doctor. Many patients use acupuncture to reduce their reliance on medication gradually under medical supervision.
